Aromatics denote the types of subunits that make up the lignin in the wildtype and transgenic trees, while Sidechains describe the type of linkages that connect them. The 2D-NMR analyses of lignin subunits and interunit linkage distribution were carried out at the University of Wisconsin by John Ralph et al., using a 750 MHz (DMX-750) Bruker Biospin (Rheinstetten, Germany) instrument.
